Hey there LaVondilyn! Quinoa is regarded as a grain, but yep, it's technically a seed. Kind of like the whole wheat kernel--it's a grain, but you can plant that little kernel as a seed to produce the wheat grain plant. When you plant the quinoa seed, it becomes a plant that's akin to beets, spinach and Swiss chard. So yes, now you have the green light to give quinoa a try. I know you have a few recipes! :-)

I've always wondered what quinoa was - I thought it was a grain! I've seen quinoa salads in specialty store - and they looked tasty - but I've never tried them. Now, I think I will try a few recipes at home... Thanks for sharing!

Hi LaVondilyn,
So glad that this article resonated with you. Although frequent trips to the grocer may not work for you (and may not work for MOST people), I will stand firm in saying that planning ahead every week is the most important thing you can do to save money and eat healthy. I've found that I save the most money in my grocery bill when I eat less meat. This may not be the way for everyone, but it really is a fact. Whole foods nutrition is inexpensive when we eat less meat and less of the convenience foods and MORE whole grains, fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, and seeds. And when you PLAN your meals accordingly, you buy only what you need, which in turn keeps you on budget. :-)

I'm so glad you did this article because I JUST threw away a bag of jalapenos that got lost under my potatoes. And last week, I chucked some zucchini I never got to...ugh. Frequent trips to the grocer is a bit much for me (I wish I had open air markets within walking distance like I did in Paris & Montreal) but no such luck here in the US... I guess I'm going to have to be more strategic in planning out my meals. Good tip...

Thanks for addressing this topic. Eating healthily IS more expensive - but my body is worth it. Some investments are just worth making... Keep the great articles coming! Blessings!

WOW!!! Christine,

This was definitely a DIVINE connection. I was just contemplating my life and some of the "weights" that I am in the process of shedding. I thought I found your twitter post by accident....but obviously not so! Selah! I am studying to be a Food Psychology Coach through Spencer Institute in California. I printed out my final exam a few days ago!!!!! My daughter and I have a cooking business for kids and their families called the" Smarty Pants Chefs" that I began in 2006. I don't want to be a poor example to my students and their families, so I am definitely on board with the changes you propose!!! Thanks so much I'll be following you for sure!

Now let me forwarn you, LaVondilyn. This Mac 'n Cheese recipe is NOT to be replaced by your southern version. And please do not expect it to taste like your version either. It is a dish that is unique and all on it's own. It's a good stand in for those who cannot or choose not to eat dairy. It will not come close to being like the ooey-gooey Mac 'n Cheese of the south. Ok, now still give it a try and tell me how you like it. I know that you're a chef in the kitchen and you can improvise to compliment your taste buds. Looking forward to hearing how it turns out. :-)

I have Zumba, but I haven't tried it yet. I like to get outdoors more when I "exercise" because I love to breathe in the fresh air. I've been to Nashville! I'm sure you'll love it. Thanks for sharing LaVon. Sounds like you have some great things planned for the year and I can't wait to see them all come to fruition! :-)

Awesome list, Christine! I, too, need to get moving this year. Going back to Zumba is on my list - along with working the bars (I enjoy stretching and bar work, a lot). I didn't travel at all in 2011 either, so I plan to do a lot of making up for that in 2012. I've done some international in the last 2 years, so I think I'm going to visit some places here in the States - Nashville is at the top of my list. Maybe I'll make it out to Chitown to connect with you this year! Happy New Year to you. Here's to being healthy and whole ;)
